Tubby Dog opened it's doors in August 2005, but the hotdog's were being served long before. Owner and creator, Jon Truch, started making hotdog's (and other bachelor foods) in his basement sculpture studio of Alberta College of Art and Design years ago, much to the delight of studio mates and passers by. In the evenings, Truch was slinging dogs over the bar at Calgary's now defunct Night Gallery. Tuesday nights were slow at the Gallery and Truch knew that free food and good tunes would bring the masses. However, the Night Gallery closed its doors and Truch's hotdog's were now homeless.
A few years later, Truch opened Tubby Dog on 17th Ave in the downtown core. Open day and night, serving beers, dogs, twinkies and T-rings, Tubby Dog has become a Calgary staple. It's a unique environment filled with eye candy, arcade games, projected cartoons, movies and customers and staff from all walks of life.
